I joined xelba in December 2018. I was shown an MVP of their primary product and it required a redesign with the addition of a number of new features.
The MVP is of the xPlatform - a data visualisation web app. Large amounts of data is received from a number of IoT devices and is then visualised.
The platform and its UX needed redesigning from the ground up. The IoT space is incredibly complex, and the xPlatform needs to take lots of data from multiple sources and simplify it for its users.
I spoke to xelba team members and asked numerous questions to increase my understanding of the xPlatform and the IoT space in general.
3 user personas were created to gain a clearer picture of who the end users are and what their problems may be.
I looked at platform competitors, in the IoT space and otherwise. I wanted to discover how others are going about tackling this problem and if I could take inspiration from certain elements.
User stories were written and a task flow was created. This was essential to visualise the layout of the product and also to be a useful artefact for other stakeholders.
I sketched out platform solutions.
I used Sketch to create greyscale wireframes of the designs. I went through multiple iterations using feedback from other members of the team.
The final iteration of greyscale wireframes was prototyped using InVision.
I conducted the first round of 5 usability tests on this prototype. The insights gathered from these tests were analysed, synthesised and then the design went through a final iteration before applying UI.
I conducted a second round of 5 usability tests on the high fidelity screens using the online tool UserTesting. There were some areas of the platform that we had concerns with and so I focussed on these areas, with the test participants being tasked to complete tasks based around these concerns.

The feedback gained from this second round of tests was incredibly insightful and helped form the final designs.
The UI was improved from the feedback gained. A light mode was created to complement the default dark mode setting.
The xPlatform will be moved into the development stage.
The xPlatform would have benefitted from more research. A greater understanding of the end users would have improved the designs and helped solve the problems being faced.
The usability tests were so insightful however there weren’t enough done. Testing early and often would have ensured that any usability issues were ironed out from the start.
